Sometimes You Need a Smaller Map… and Sometimes You Just Need to Get in the Van.

During COVID, when everything shut down and I unexpectedly found myself off work for two weeks, I called my sister and told her to pack for a week and come over. At the time, that was pretty… Read More

Questions for Fort Worth

I’m heading to a missionary conference in Fort Worth this month, so my desk is filling up with questions. I have been writing down questions about missionary care, preparation, church involvement, and what support actually helps people on the field.

Mission Spotlight

What If the Mission Field Is Already in Your Neighborhood?

When we hear the word missions, it is easy to picture a destination far from home. For many missionaries, that is exactly what answering the call requires. However, the movement of people around the world has also created opportunities for cross-cultural ministry much closer to home.

Refuge International is one organization built around that reality. Based in Louisville, Kentucky, Refuge partners with local churches to serve refugees and immigrants who are building lives in the United States. Its vision is simple: to see a Christian friend for every immigrant.

What makes the organization interesting is that much of its ministry begins with ordinary needs. Learning English. Learning to drive. Understanding a new culture. Finding community. Making a friend. Refuge gives Christians practical ways to come alongside immigrants as they navigate life, while equipping local churches to become places where newcomers are genuinely welcomed. Before You Go, Learn How to Be a Guest
You may be traveling to serve, but you are still entering someone else’s home and community. Before you go, learn a little about local customs, greetings, clothing, meals, and basic phrases. Once you arrive, watch, ask questions, and follow the lead of local people and ministry partners.
