Culture corner

Brazil is a country of extremes and contrasts. Half of South America falls within its borders, stretching from the dense, endless canopy of the Amazon rainforest in the north to the bustling coastal cities of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo in the south. The Amazon alone is home to an extraordinary share of the world's biodiversity, along with dozens of indigenous tribes, some still living in isolation from the outside world.

Brazil's culture reflects centuries of blending, indigenous roots, Portuguese colonization, and the forced arrival of enslaved Africans, all woven together into something entirely its own. That blend shows up everywhere: in samba, in Carnival, in food, and in faith. Football runs almost as deep as culture itself, with Brazil having won more World Cups than any other nation.

Family, faith, and celebration sit close together here, and hospitality runs warm and loud.

Mission Presence

Christianity runs deep in Brazil, but its shape has changed dramatically in recent decades. Brazil's 2022 census found that approximately 47.4 million Brazilians, or nearly 27 percent of the population, identified as evangelical, a share that has grown more than fivefold over the last fifty years.

Much of that growth is happening deep in the Amazon, where missionaries traveling by canoe and riverboat are planting churches and baptizing thousands of new believers in communities once considered nearly unreachable. Still, significant need remains. There is an evangelical missionary presence in 182 indigenous communities, representing more than 30 mission agencies and nearly 100 denominations, yet 95 percent of the 121 unreached people groups in Brazil have no missionary activity at all.

Organizations like ABWE, Christian Aid Mission, and local indigenous led ministries continue working across Brazil's coastal cities, rural interior, and remote river communities. Work ranges from tribal outreach and isolated seaplane accessible villages to urban church planting, leadership training, and theological education.
